The Eternal Word
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
2 He was in the beginning with God.
3 All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made.
4 In Him was life, and the life was the light of men.
5 And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.
Notes and Lessons from John 1:1-5
Throughout the Book of John, we will see different Descriptions and Attributes of Jesus Christ.
Right from the beginning we are introduced to Jesus as the following:
1. The Word
2. The One who was with God, Right in the Beginning
3. Jesus is God
4. The One who Made All Things
5. The One in Whom Life can be found
6. The Light of Men
At this point, one will wonder, who are we referring to here. The One who was with God and
who is God. If you are reading this for the first time you might wonder who this is. This first
section has not mentioned Jesus yet but it is referring to Him as we will see in Verse 14 of John
1 when it tells us the word became flesh and dwelt among us. The passage provides more
clarity on Jesus as we move into the next set of sections.
Throughout this study we will point out some themes to focus on. Please feel free to bring up
any themes you notice. We will discuss some of the themes now and some might be discussed
with the next cohort going through this series. Here is the first theme we have to examine.
THEME: The Beginning and Creation
In the class website on Google Classroom, I have attached an extra resource which is a paper
focusing on Creation and the Beginning. This is a very important topic but one which some
people take lightly. Please feel free to read that article and write your thoughts on it. I have also
attached the article at the end of this section.
The Apostle Paul who wrote a lot of the Books in the New Testament shared more on this topic
of Jesus being involved in Creation.
“He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For by Him all things were
created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or
dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him. And He
is before all things, and in Him all things consist. And He is the head of the body, the church,
who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in all things He may have the
preeminence.” Colossians 1:15-18 NKJV
From the passage above, we learn some very important things about Jesus. One of these
things is that Jesus holds all things together “in Him all things Consist.”
We will come back to another theme later when it talks about all things being created through
Him and For Him. The meaning of Life is found in Jesus. We were created to live for Him and for
the Glory of God. There is much more on this but I do want to encourage you to write about this
topic as well in detail. This is because the world is looking for meaning and purpose. As we go
through this course you I pray you will be equipped more to walk through life’s journey. I also
pray you will be a blessing to many in this world.
A Few Analogies
Everyone has heard of Gravity or Gravitational Force. This is the attractive force between 2
massive objects. We see this with the Sun and the Earth. The Earth revolves around the Sun
because of the Gravitational Force. The famous Scientist Sir Isaac Newton is described as the
individual who gave us the explanation of gravity. He lived from 1642-1727.

When we think of the atom, we know that it has electrons, and also protons and neutrons which
are made out of fundamental particles. However one important feature of the atom is the
Nucleus (which houses the protons and neutrons). Electrons in an atom are held by forces
towards the nucleus.

In both cases, notice they are held together by a Central Force. In Jesus things are also held
together. He holds our lives together. He gives life meaning and in Him life makes sense
because He created life.
Jesus holds all things together in a similar manner as those forces hold things together with the
atom and with the Earth and the Gravitational pull of the Sun.
Here is a quote to consider as we finish up this section by C.S Lewis:
I believe in Christianity as I believe that the sun has risen: not only because I see it, but because
by it I see everything else.
Applications & Questions to Ponder
1. As we see the attributes of Jesus in the Book of John, what comes to mind from some of these attributes?
2. How have you seen some of these attributes played out in your life?
3. What do you believe about the Beginning? What passages or portions of the Bible
address this topic? Feel free to share some.
